Located near Selfoss, Torfhús Retreat serves as the perfect starting point to explore iconic natural wonders such as Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the geysers of Geysir. At the same time, it offers an oasis of tranquility, amidst the pristine Icelandic nature.
The architecture of the retreat is inspired by the centuries-old turf houses, with a contemporary twist. Upon arrival, it immediately feels as if the world pauses for a moment. The tranquility, the view over the lava fields, the gentle rustling of nature – Torfhús Retreat invites you to unwind. Whether you are cozily sitting indoors by the fireplace or relaxing in your private outdoor hot tub under the stars, everything exudes luxury and serenity. Accommodation
Torfhús Retreat offers two types of accommodations:
- Torfhús (suitable for a maximum of 6 people): Traditionally built turf houses with a grass roof, wooden beams, and stone, featuring a spacious living room, fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, bathroom with rain shower, underfloor heating, and a private hot tub (torfbað).
- Torfbaer Suites (for 2 people): Luxurious hotel rooms in turf style with a king-size bed, stylish bathroom, seating area, and direct access to a shared warm plunge pool. Ideal for couples.
Restaurant
Dining at Torfhús is an experience in itself. In the charming longhouse restaurant, ever-changing menus are served daily, based on local and seasonal ingredients: freshly caught fish, lamb from nearby farms, wild herbs, and berries. Everything is prepared by a chef with an eye for detail and a passion for Icelandic flavors. Dining can take place at long communal tables or in an intimate setting, depending on your preference.
Breakfast
The breakfast is included and served à la carte. Think homemade skyr with berries, freshly baked bread, eggs cooked to your liking, and organic juices. A peaceful, nourishing start to the day.
Swimming pool
There is no traditional swimming pool, but each accommodation features its own natural, geothermally heated plunge pool – a cozy outdoor hot tub, perfect for relaxing in the evening under the stars or the Northern Lights.
Spa
There is no traditional spa, but the warm baths and natural surroundings create a wellness experience in themselves. Massages and private yoga sessions can be arranged upon request.
Activities
From Torfhús Retreat, the most unforgettable experiences are within easy reach. In the morning, you might gallop on an Icelandic horse through lava fields and past steaming hot springs. In the afternoon, you could stand face-to-face with the Strokkur geyser or walk along the edge of an ancient crater. Craving adventure? Go snowmobiling on Langjökull or snorkel between two continents in Silfra. And after a day full of impressions, you will return to the tranquility of your turf house – where candles are burning and the bath is already waiting for you.

Torfhús Retreat is built with respect for nature. The turf houses are not only aesthetically unique but also excellently insulated and energy-efficient. The hot water for the baths and heating comes directly from a natural geothermal source. The kitchen uses local products of sustainable origin whenever possible, and waste is carefully separated. Plastic use is also kept to a minimum. Staying here is therefore not only luxurious but also conscious.
