Travel documents / visa
A valid Dutch passport/Belgian International Travel Document is required for New Zealand and must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date from New Zealand.
If you hold a Dutch passport/Belgian International Travel Document, you are eligible for the electronic visa, the NZeTA. It is valid for up to 3 months and can be requested by yourself through the official website of the New Zealand government. Payment on the website can only be made with a credit card.
Everyone traveling to New Zealand must complete the digital New Zealand Traveller Declaration. This must be done within 24 hours before your flight from the Netherlands/Belgium, or from any stopover destination (where you truly leave the airport with your luggage) to New Zealand. For each traveler, including children and babies, this form must be filled out separately. After completing the form, you will receive a reference number. Keep this safe and have it ready upon arrival in New Zealand, in case it is requested. You do not need to print the form. It is linked to your passport, and once your passport is scanned upon arrival in New Zealand, they will immediately see that you have completed the form.
Climate & best time to travel
New Zealand is located in the Southern Hemisphere, which means that the seasons are opposite to ours. The country roughly experiences the same seasons as we do, but summer falls from December to February and winter from June to August.
Generally, the country has a temperate maritime climate. This means that it has mild winters and warm summers, with precipitation possible throughout the year. Since the North Island is closer to the equator, it is usually a few degrees warmer than the South Island. The northernmost areas, where Auckland and the Bay of Islands are located, enjoy the warmest temperatures. However, the weather in New Zealand can change quickly, so keep this in mind, especially if you plan to go for a long walk. Also, be aware that the sun is stronger here than in the Netherlands, so applying sunscreen is highly recommended.
The country also features many mountain ranges where temperatures are somewhat lower. Summers here are much cooler, and in winter, snow falls and temperatures can drop significantly. These areas are ideal for hiking in summer, and in winter, New Zealand has several popular ski resorts. The highest peaks are even covered with eternal snow.
New Zealand is an excellent destination to visit all year round. The months of December to February are the most popular, as it is summer during this time. Kiwis also enjoy traveling within their own country during these months. If you plan to travel during this peak season, make sure to book your accommodations and transportation well in advance.
Vaccinations & health
New Zealand is a safe country to travel to, where diseases such as malaria do not occur. The country has very strict import requirements and quarantine regulations, which have prevented many bacteria and diseases from entering the country. Additionally, animals with dangerous bites, such as venomous snakes, are not present here.
No vaccinations are required for travel to New Zealand.
Health Advice
Always ensure you are well protected against the sun with a hat, sunglasses, and a good high-factor sunscreen, as the sun is much stronger here than in the Netherlands due to the thinner ozone layer. It is also recommended to use a good insect repellent or cream with DEET. Not only against mosquitoes, but also against sandflies that are found on beaches and along riverbanks. They leave itchy bumps that can persist for a very long time.
Time difference
From October to March, it is 12 hours later in New Zealand, and from April to September, it is 10 hours later than in the Netherlands. Daylight saving time in New Zealand does not start on the same date as in the Netherlands, and during the transition period, the time difference can be 11 hours.
Money & Currency
The currency of New Zealand is the New Zealand dollar. The money consists of banknotes of NZD 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100, as well as coins of 10, 20, and 50 cents, and NZD 1 and 2.
In most places, you will find ATMs where you can withdraw money with your World Card, provided the ATM bears the Cirrus logo. The most well-known credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa are also accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores. Please note that nowadays, a PIN is usually required for credit card payments, so do not forget it. You can also exchange money at banks or currency exchange offices. However, this is often more cumbersome than withdrawing cash or paying with your credit card, and the exchange rates are often less favorable.
