Zanzibar

An exotic African paradise

Discover Zanzibar

True bounty islands, they still exist. Snow-white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, and a turquoise blue sea—this is the view of Zanzibar. Here, life remains wonderfully relaxed, and your beach holiday will mainly consist of unwinding, delicious food, and pure enjoyment.

Just about 50 kilometers off the east coast of Tanzania, not far from the city of Dar Es Salaam, lies Zanzibar. In fact, Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous state made up of approximately 50 islands. The main island is officially called Unguja, but is commonly known as Zanzibar. The islands are also called the Spice Islands because a great variety of spices are still traded there to this day.

Dreamy White Beaches and Azure Blue Sea

Unguja, or Zanzibar, is beloved for its dreamy white beaches bordering azure blue waters. Most resorts are located in the east because this is where the most beautiful beaches can be found. Many beaches are subject to significant tidal differences, meaning swimming in the stunning sea isn't always possible. That’s why many resorts often feature a beautiful swimming pool. In the north, you can enjoy excellent snorkeling and diving to admire the breathtaking underwater world.

The capital, Stone Town, boasts a stunning old town center filled with narrow, winding streets. In the historic buildings, Arab, Indian, and African influences are evident, remnants from the island’s trading history. It is definitely worth spending a morning wandering through these streets.

Or take a ‘spice tour’ and visit one of the many spice farms the island is famous for. See how different herbs grow, and perhaps find a charming souvenir here. Head to the water and enjoy a sunset cruise or go snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear waters. A boat trip to Prison Island, home to the remarkable giant tortoises, is also a fun excursion to undertake.

Further relaxation can be found at the resort’s luxurious spa or at the fine dining restaurant serving fresh seafood dishes. Take a romantic walk along the beach with the soothing sound of the waves as your background music, and end the evening with a cocktail and a good conversation. These memories are the ultimate souvenirs to take home and enjoy long after your trip.
