Discover South Africa

South Africa, situated at the southern tip of the African continent, leaves a lasting impression with its breathtaking natural beauty and vibrant culture. The country is renowned for its stunning safaris, where the "Big Five" can be admired amidst pristine landscapes. Dining at a boma under the African starlit sky adds a magical element to the experience, complete with the distant roars of lions in the background.

Along the coast around Cape Town and the Western Cape, South Africa offers a magnificent coastline, especially along the famous Garden Route. Here, you can enjoy spectacular views, charming villages, and scenic beaches. The region also hosts some of the world's best whale-watching spots, such as Hermanus, where humpback whales can be seen during the season.

What makes South Africa unique is its cultural diversity. Often called the "Rainbow Nation," cities like Cape Town embody this diversity in architecture, art, and culinary traditions.

Gastronomically, South Africa surprises with a diverse cuisine that reflects the flavors of the land. The world-famous South African wines complete the culinary experience. Every journey in South Africa becomes an exploration, where nature, culture, and culinary adventures come together to create an unforgettable experience.

Practical information

Time difference

During our summer (winter in South Africa), there is no time difference; during our winter (summer in South Africa), it is one hour later in South Africa. Therefore, there is no jet lag when traveling.

Climate & Best Time to Travel

The seasons in South Africa are exactly opposite to those in the Netherlands. When it is summer in our country, South Africa is in the winter months. This results in a moderate climate with warm, dry summers and cool, dry winters. As a result, South Africa is a popular holiday destination all year round.

Within South Africa itself, temperature differences can be observed. This is due to the varying altitude of the country. In the north and northeast, where Kruger Park is located, a tropical to subtropical climate prevails. This makes the park accessible year-round. However, the best time for a safari is during the cool, dry winter. In some inland areas, a desert climate is present.

In the vicinity of Cape Town, one experiences a Mediterranean climate. Unlike the rest of the country, most of the rainfall occurs during the winter months.

The best time to visit South Africa is during the autumn (March - April) and spring (September - October). During these periods, humidity is lower and temperatures are pleasant, between 20°C and 25°C. An extra special feature is the spring in South Africa: the Western Cape transforms into a stunning sea of blooming wildflowers.

Vaccinations & health

Vaccinations

For a trip to South Africa, no vaccinations are officially required. However, to ensure optimal protection, several vaccinations are highly recommended:

  • DTP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B

In some areas, malaria or other mosquito-borne diseases may be present. It is important to protect yourself well against mosquito bites with a product containing DEET. Sometimes it may be necessary to take tablets to prevent malaria, and the type of medication needed is individual. Please contact Thuisvaccinaties.nl, your general practitioner, or the GGD for advice.

Health Advice

The sun in South Africa is much stronger than in the Netherlands. We recommend that you start slowly with sun exposure and avoid the hottest hours of the day. It is important to thoroughly apply a high-factor sunscreen.

In the tropical heat, you lose a lot of fluids. A lack of hydration can cause severe headaches. We advise you to drink plenty of water and to take breaks from the sun regularly. Pay special attention to children, as their skin is still very sensitive. Don't forget to bring sunglasses, a hat, or a cap.

Drinking tap water is not recommended in South Africa. You can buy bottled mineral water everywhere.

Important holidays

In South Africa, there are several important public holidays and celebrations. Below is an overview of some significant days:

Travel documents / visa

Travelers to South Africa need a Dutch passport/Belgian International Travel Document that remains valid for at least three months after departure from South Africa. A visa is not required for South Africa.

This information applies to travelers with Dutch/Belgian nationality. It is possible that destinations may have different requirements and require a shorter passport validity. We recommend contacting the relevant embassy/consulate. The passport must contain two blank pages adjacent to each other for stamps.

Money & currency

When traveling to South Africa, please keep in mind that the currency is the South African Rand. 1 rand is approximately 5 eurocents. The rand is divided into 100 cents, and you may bring in or take out a maximum of R5000. There are no limits for foreign currencies.

In many places in South Africa, you can pay with a credit card. ATMs are widely available and generally accepted. The skimming phenomenon is becoming more common in Africa, so please stay alert. Never let anyone assist you when withdrawing money from an ATM or using a card reader.

If you wish to use your debit card outside Europe, be aware that most Dutch banks have set the cards to be used only within Europe for safety reasons. However, you can choose to extend this setting to 'world,' so your debit card can also be used outside Europe.
