Travel documents / visa
Travelers to Namibia need a Dutch passport/Belgian International Travel Document that is valid for at least six months after departure from Namibia. No visa is required for stays of up to 3 months. At customs in Namibia, you must be able to present upon request: a return or onward ticket to show that you plan to leave the country, and a vaccination certificate against yellow fever if you are entering from a yellow fever zone (see lcr.nl for more information).
This information applies to travelers with Dutch/Belgian nationality. Please note that the availability of visas and the validity of passports and visas are subject to significant change. We recommend consulting the consular section of the Namibian embassy for the most up-to-date information.
Climate & Best Time to Travel
In Namibia, the seasons are different from the Netherlands: what is summer here is winter in Namibia and vice versa. The country has a desert climate and is known as one of the driest countries in the world. During the day, temperatures can rise significantly, especially in summer, while it cools down sharply at night.
The best time to travel to Namibia is generally from May to September, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and the chances of rainfall are minimal. This is also the best time to spot wildlife in Etosha National Park.
The rainy season in Namibia runs from late November to early April, although precipitation does not occur everywhere and mainly consists of short, intense showers that quickly clear up.
Vaccinations & health
It is always recommended to seek advice well before your trip regarding the necessary vaccinations. Although no vaccinations are officially required for a visit to Namibia, certain vaccinations are advised.
It is recommended to get the D.T.P. (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio), Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B vaccinations. In some areas, malaria or other mosquito-borne diseases may occur. It is important to protect yourself against mosquito bites with a product that contains DEET. Sometimes, tablets are needed to prevent malaria, and the type of medication required is personalized. Please contact Thuisvaccinaties.nl, your general practitioner, or the GGD for advice.
The sun in Namibia is much stronger than in the Netherlands. We advise you to take it easy with sun exposure at the beginning and to avoid the hottest hours of the day. It is important to apply a high SPF sunscreen, such as SPF 15 to 30, thoroughly.
In the tropical heat, you lose a lot of fluids. A deficiency in fluids can lead to severe headaches. We recommend drinking plenty of water and taking regular breaks in the shade. Pay special attention to children, as their skin is still very sensitive. Don't forget to bring sunglasses, a hat, or a cap.
Drinking tap water is discouraged in Namibia. You can buy bottled mineral water everywhere.
Time difference
During daylight saving time, there is no time difference; during standard time, it is one hour later than in the Netherlands.
Money & Currency
When traveling to Namibia, please note that the currency is the Namibian Dollar, which is pegged to the South African Rand. If you divide an amount in Namibian Dollars by ten, you will get an approximate price in Euros. Keep in mind that you cannot pay with Namibian Dollars in South Africa.
In many places in Namibia, you can pay with a credit card. The skimming phenomenon is becoming more common in Africa, so we advise you to always pay in cash at shops and gas stations. Also, never let anyone assist you when withdrawing money from an ATM or making a card payment.
If you want to use your debit card outside Europe, please be aware that most Dutch banks have set the cards to be used only within Europe for safety reasons. However, you can choose to extend this to ‘world’ so that your debit card can be used outside Europe as well.
