Travel documents / visa
Travelers to Saudi Arabia need a Dutch passport/Belgian international travel document that is valid for at least six months after departure from Saudi Arabia. You also need a visa when traveling to Saudi Arabia.
Before departure, you can apply for an e-visa online or purchase one upon arrival at the airport. Your visa is valid for one year, and within this period, you can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days (these can be separate periods).
Are you traveling with children? They also need a valid passport and visa. Through Visit Saudi, it is possible to apply for a group visa. This is also convenient when traveling with family or even with two people.
Climate & Best Time to Travel
Saudi Arabia has a desert climate. This means that most of the country is dry and receives little rainfall. Avoid the summer months when temperatures in July and August can rise above 40 degrees Celsius. Additionally, sandstorms also occur during the summer months.
The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is during our winter months from October to April. The temperatures during this period are pleasant, averaging between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. The humidity is minimal during this time.
Vaccinations & Health
It is always recommended to inquire about the necessary vaccinations well before your travel date. Although no vaccinations are officially mandatory for a visit to Saudi Arabia, certain vaccinations are advised. It is recommended to receive the D.T.P. (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio) and Hepatitis A vaccinations.
The sun in Saudi Arabia is much stronger than in the Netherlands. We advise you to take it easy in the beginning and avoid the hottest hours of the day. It is important to apply a high-factor sunscreen generously.
In the tropical heat, you lose a lot of fluids. A deficiency in fluids can lead to severe headaches. We recommend drinking plenty of water and taking breaks in the shade regularly. Pay special attention to children, as their skin is still very sensitive. Don't forget to bring sunglasses, a hat, or a cap.
Drinking tap water is not recommended in Saudi Arabia. You can buy bottled mineral water everywhere.
Time difference
What is the time difference between the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia?
- During our summer time, it is 1 hour later in Saudi Arabia.
- During our winter time, it is 2 hours later in Saudi Arabia.
Money & Currency
When traveling to Saudi Arabia, please keep in mind that the currency is the Saudi Riyal. 1 riyal is approximately ¼ euro.
Make sure to bring multiple payment methods to Saudi Arabia, such as a debit or credit card, and also carry enough cash.
If you wish to use your debit card outside Europe, be aware that most Dutch banks have it set for security reasons to only work within Europe by default. However, you can choose to expand the usage to 'world' so that your debit card can also be used outside Europe.
Important holidays
Ramadan occurs every year one month earlier than the previous year. Ramadan lasts for a month, and depending on the lunar cycle, the start of this period can vary by a few days. Ramadan concludes with the Eid al-Fitr celebration, which lasts a weekend.
Please keep in mind that during Ramadan, a more restrained way of living is observed. Restaurants may be closed or only open after sunset with a special Ramadan menu. Also, be aware of different opening hours and potentially closed facilities in hotels.
The pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) and Arafat fall on different dates each year. Check the dates when planning your trip (as well as for Ramadan). The same applies to the Eid al-Adha festival.
September 23rd is National Day in Saudi Arabia.
Traditionally, Christmas and New Year are not celebrated in Saudi Arabia. However, hotels do accommodate international travelers who do celebrate. Special gala dinners are often held on these occasions.
The weekend in Saudi Arabia is Friday and Saturday. The new workweek begins on Sunday. Please note that shops and official institutions are closed on Saturday and may have limited hours on Friday.
Alcohol & Islamic Laws
Possession, trading, or use of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Saudi Arabia.
Please observe the local customs and traditions in Saudi Arabia. The country has strict Islamic laws. Failing to adhere to these laws can have serious consequences.
Saudi Arabia is a deeply religious Islamic country. Dress codes, for example, are much more conservative than in the Netherlands. Men and women must dress modestly in public. It is not mandatory for women to wear a traditional abaya (a loose-fitting garment, similar to a dress), but especially in Medina, it is necessary to wear loose and covering clothing.
Certain behaviors may even be prohibited, such as:
- Physical contact in public
- Public intoxication
- Topless sunbathing and nudism
