Climate & Best Time to Travel
What is the most suitable time to travel to the Maldives? The Maldives has a tropical climate with temperatures around 29°C throughout the year. The sun shines on average eight hours a day all year round. Therefore, you can visit the Maldives in any season. However, humidity and rainfall vary depending on the time of year.
The best time to visit the Maldives is from January to April. This is also known as the dry season, with February being the driest month. During this period, the northeast monsoon (Iruvai) brings little rain, resulting in clear skies and low humidity.
The southwest monsoon (Hulhangu) causes rain from May to October, with May and September being the wettest months. Despite the increased rainfall during this period, temperatures remain pleasant. The rain usually falls in short, intense showers.
Best time to snorkel and dive
Besides its pleasant climate, the Maldives also offers excellent opportunities for diving. With its crystal-clear waters and an abundance of colorful coral reefs, the archipelago attracts diving enthusiasts from around the world. You can enjoy diving in the Maldives year-round, but the best period is during the dry months. The water is then clearer, and underwater visibility is better. You can explore stunning coral reefs, swim with tropical fish, and possibly encounter sharks and manta rays. Many dive resorts and dive schools are available to help you explore the underwater world of the Maldives, regardless of your experience level.
Vaccinations & Health
For travels to the Maldives, several vaccinations are recommended, such as DTP and hepatitis A.
Time difference
The atolls of the Maldives are located in different time zones. In the capital Malé, it is three hours later than in the Netherlands. During Dutch daylight saving time, it is four hours later. On some atolls, it is four or five hours later in winter than in the Netherlands. But mostly, you can rely on the following:
Time difference with the Netherlands in winter: 4 hours later in the Maldives
Time difference with the Netherlands in summer: 3 hours later in the Maldives
Money & Currency
The currency in the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). However, most transactions are conducted in US dollars due to its favorable value. We recommend bringing US dollars in cash, preferably in small denominations. Major credit cards are accepted at all resorts.
Important holidays
There are a few national holidays in the Maldives. You will hardly notice them at the resort, but banks and government offices are closed on these days.
- The main holidays in the Maldives are:
- New Year's Day – January 1
- National Day – January 2
- Islamization Day – February 3
