NIHI Sumba

Nihiwatu Beach, Sumba

Luxury in an Untouched Paradise

Sumba is a still undiscovered gem in the vast Indonesian archipelago. It is therefore no surprise that one of the most luxurious and extraordinary resorts in the country is found here. Originally designed for surfing enthusiasts, it is now suitable for anyone wishing to enjoy Sumba's pristine beauty, in sustainable luxury.

The resort is situated on a hill overlooking a 2.5 km unspoiled beach, surrounded by lush nature. The architecture is inspired by this stunning environment and the culture of Sumba. Each villa is unique, beautifully decorated, and equipped with its own plunge pool or a pool on a terrace with sea views. A butler is included to ensure that nothing is lacking. You stay on a 'full board plus' basis, with the only exclusions being alcoholic beverages. All you need to do is decide what you want to do each day—or not do—and the rest is simply relaxing and enjoying.

With the development of the original resort, the Sumba Foundation was established, a charity that gives back to the Sumbanese community in various ways. This foundation is still active today. You can contribute to one of the foundation's projects, but just your stay at this resort already makes a difference, as a large part of the income directly benefits the Sumba Foundation.

NIHI Spa Safari

A spa treatment is truly an essential part of a relaxing beach holiday. But NIHI takes it a step further and has developed a genuine Spa Safari: you are taken for half or a full day to another world, where relaxation for the body and mind is at the forefront. You travel in a unique way across undulating hill landscapes and vast rice fields to the neighboring valley: during a sunrise walk, horseback riding, or a safari jeep ride. Here, you are warmly welcomed, and your program is tailored to your preferences. You can start with a refreshing dip in the sea, followed by a freshly cooked breakfast over an open fire. Or you can begin your wellness program immediately, with a wide selection of professional treatments.

Chris and Charly’s Chocolate Factory

In NIHI's own 'chocolate factory', children (and adults) can make their own chocolate. After a brief introduction and explanation about how cocoa beans are processed, everyone receives an apron and is invited to get started on creating their own chocolate bar. They can choose between dark or milk chocolate, which is then decorated with a selection of toppings. Once cooled, the bars are brought to the villa during the turndown service.

Hotel Information

Accommodation

The resort features 27 villas, each unique in style and interior design. There are villas with 1, 2, 3, or 4 bedrooms. All villas have at least a plunge pool, and the larger the villa, the bigger the private pool becomes. Space is no issue, as even the smallest villa is still 158 m². The larger 4-Bedroom villas extend up to 707 m². If you are traveling with a larger group and wish to stay close to each other, you can book the Owner’s Estate. This is a complex of 5,233 m², consisting of 6 villas. Additionally, there are many 1-Bedroom villas that can be connected and booked together, making it ideal for families and groups of friends traveling together.

Each villa has a spacious terrace and offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean. Although each interior is unique, natural, local materials and decorations by local artists have been extensively used. The minibar is included in the room rate, and Wi-Fi is available in the villas. Please note: there are no TVs in the villas. Most bathrooms are semi-open and feature a freestanding bathtub and an outdoor shower.

Restaurants

Ombak is the main restaurant where you can enjoy breakfast and dinner with your feet in the sand. Here, you will find both Indonesian and international dishes on the menu. By the pool, there is Nio Beach Club, where you can indulge in a delicious fresh lunch. Think of the 'catch of the day' from the BBQ, salads, and pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven. If you get hungry during the day, head to Boat House, where snacks are served all day long. Perfectly complemented by a fresh coconut, fruit juices, or a colorful cocktail. And what is that building with the huge, typical Sumbanese roof? That is Menara, also known as the resort's living room. Here, you will find a lounge area with a pool table, table tennis, and a small library. Drinks are also available here. Finally, on the beach, you will find Kaboku, where you can enjoy delicious fresh sushi among other things.

Activities

NIHI takes you into a completely different world. Here, you can enjoy peace and comfort, but you can also embark on a variety of activities. You can participate in water activities, including, of course, surfing. You can book surf lessons or discover other surf beaches during a 'surfari.' But you can also go snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking, for example.

When you are on Sumba, you will likely want to explore more of the surroundings. There is a wide range of excursions available, including walking and cycling tours, as well as visits to local villages and markets. A special experience is the Sumba Foundation Tour, where you visit some of the foundation’s projects and see for yourself what they do on the island. You can even volunteer for a morning at the foundation’s school lunch program. This is truly an authentic experience and is never a touristy event.

But there is more. Horses are an important part of daily life on Sumba. NIHI has its own stables, Sandalwood Stables, from which they offer a number of activities with Sumbanese horses. Think of wonderful rides at sunrise or sunset, or swimming in the sea with the horses. There is even a 5-day program focused on the relationship between humans and horses.

Wellness and Spa

At the Boat House Spa, which offers stunning sea views, you can indulge in a wide range of spa treatments. Of course, there is a large selection of massages, but you can also enjoy a manicure or pedicure. There are even treatments specially designed for children. You can also book a spa treatment in the privacy of your own villa.

If you desire a more extensive spa experience, consider booking a Spa Safari. This takes place in an adjacent valley, where you can enjoy delightful treatments in scattered pavilions, with the sound of palm trees and waves in the background.

On the other side of the resort lies the Yoga Pavilion, where you can start each day with a yoga session.

Sustainability

Since the beginning of this resort, sustainability has been a key priority. It has always been the intention for this resort to operate with minimal impact on the environment. This commitment continues to this day. There is an organic garden where herbs and vegetables are cultivated for use in the restaurants, and as much as possible, local products are used. On a social level, the resort also contributes significantly to the local community, especially through the Sumba Foundation and in collaboration with the Sumba Hospitality Foundation. The latter trains young people to work in tourism.
