After the abolition of slavery, as many as half a million Indian workers arrived in Mauritius in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They came here to work on the sugarcane fields or to continue their journey to other colonial outposts. This immense migration played a crucial role in the island's history and heritage. Today, the Indo-Mauritian population is by far the largest ethnic group in Mauritius, accounting for more than two-thirds of the population.
