Outside the city, you will find some impressive sites to visit, such as Hell’s Gate. This is an active mud volcano with an enormous expanse of bubbling and splattering mud, a hot waterfall, natural hot springs, and steaming geysers. Or Wai-O-Tapu, a natural area with colorful and steaming craters and impressive geysers.
Another highlight of Rotorua is the rich Māori culture. There are several Māori villages to visit, where you can learn more about Māori mythology, their way of life, and culture, which is expressed through dance, singing, and stories. A visit to the living Māori village Te Whakarewarewa is more commercial, but here you will also find a stunning geothermal area with impressive geysers that erupt several times a day to great heights.
At the end of the day, you can relax completely with a short walk along the peaceful Lake Rotorua, followed by a delicious hearty dinner.
