Mauritius

A very diverse destination

Island of Diverse Beauty and Rich Culture

Written by: Patrizia Struchel (Product Manager)

When you think of your next beach holiday destination, Mauritius may not immediately come to mind. Yet, this island in the Indian Ocean is a gem that combines the beauty of its beaches with the richness of its culture and history. Known for its diverse influences—African, Asian, and European—Mauritius is a destination that has something to offer every traveler.

The Nature of Mauritius

Mauritius offers not only breathtaking beaches. Yes, the crystal-clear ocean and white sandy shores are inviting, but the island's interior is just as captivating. Nature lovers will find their paradise hiking through the Black River Gorges or exploring the dense forest of Ebony Forest. The landscapes here tell the story of a green, lively island thriving in the heart of the Indian Ocean.

During my visit in March, I enjoyed perfect weather, with occasional cooling nighttime rain showers that only enhanced the island’s lush vegetation. It quickly became clear to me that experiencing Mauritius in one visit is impossible. Every region has its own unique ambiance and beauty.

The South: Le Morne and More

In the south, Mount Le Morne stands as a symbol of the island's natural beauty. Here, you can take a helicopter tour to witness the stunning illusion of an underwater waterfall — a phenomenon as mysterious as it is breathtaking. A stay at the charming Dinarobin Beachcomber, with its luxurious villas and breathtaking ocean views, is an experience in itself.

In this region, you will also find the 'Seven Coloured Earths,' a natural wonder that is as extraordinary as it is unique, nestled among the lush vegetation of Mauritius. This compact area, approximately 200 by 200 meters, boasts sand dunes in seven different colors: red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow. Together, they create a spectrum of color layers that change with the movement of the sun, offering a constantly shifting palette of hues. Don't forget to visit a nearby waterfall and the historic Ebony Forest, where you can walk through a landscape that reflects the island's history.

For an extra touch of indulgence, consider staying at the beautiful Lakaz Chamarel. This unique accommodation, infused with authentic charm and surrounded by tropical flowers, offers stunning rooms and villas that guarantee privacy and serenity. It is the perfect place to relax in peace and quiet.

The Capital: Port Louis

Port Louis, the vibrant capital of Mauritius, is a fascinating melting pot of cultures and flavors. A place where history and contemporary life seamlessly blend together.

The Waterfront of Port Louis is more than just a location; it is an experience. Here, amidst modern shopping centers and stylish restaurants, you can still feel the echoes of the island’s rich past. It is the perfect place to walk, shop, or simply sit and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

A visit to the market is a must in Port Louis. The market is a bustling melting pot where the life of Mauritius in all its facets comes together. Here, among stalls full of fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, and crafts, you will experience the true soul of the city. The Creole Delight food tour is an excellent opportunity to taste this diversity, from the lively streets to the delicious Chilicakes in Chinatown and the unique Mauritian Alouda, a refreshing herbal milk drink that you won’t find anywhere else.

Beaches and Snorkeling along the West Coast

The west coast of Mauritius, with its breathtaking sunsets and calm waters, is perhaps the most visited part of the island. Flic en Flac and the surrounding beaches are dotted with a range of resorts, from luxurious retreats to family-friendly hotels, each with its own unique flair and hospitality. One activity you certainly should not miss along the west coast is a catamaran trip. These excursions offer a unique opportunity to explore the sparkling Indian Ocean, with stops at secluded islands and the chance to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Along the way, there is a high likelihood of spotting dolphins, which often swim and play in the waves along the coast.
