About Split Apple Retreat

Completely unwind, surrounded by stunning nature, at the Split Apple Retreat. This lodge is situated on a lushly vegetated cliff with breathtaking views of Abel Tasman National Park. In this serene environment, it is no surprise that the lodge focuses on complete 'wellness' of body and mind. Not only is it possible to follow a fully customized wellness program here, but the fresh, healthy cuisine has also earned an excellent reputation.

The Asian influences in the lodge's decor stem from the owner's great love for Asian art. The lodge even has its own art gallery filled with Asian artworks for you to admire. Despite its small scale, they offer a very good Japanese-style spa. Find your inner peace in the Japanese garden or the small yoga pavilion. With such a wonderful lodge, you might almost forget to visit the stunning neighboring Abel Tasman National Park to immerse yourself in nature’s splendor.

Restaurants

The owner of the lodge is a retired doctor, specialized in nutrition, and his wife is a chef and culinary artist. The result is a great passion for healthy food, prepared at a high culinary level and beautifully presented. Her cooking skills are now more famous than the lodge itself, and the couple has even published a cookbook. You will experience it firsthand, as breakfast and gastronomic dinners are included daily. The wine cellar is also filled with extraordinary wines.

Wellness and Spa

Every aspect of the lodge is focused on your well-being and relaxation, with no sensory experience left out. Unwind in the Japanese Spa, overlooking Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park. Enjoy a delightful massage or request a private yoga session, with various yoga styles available. If you have always wanted to learn how to meditate, this is the perfect place to start.

Activities

The activities at the lodge itself mainly focus on relaxation and well-being. However, the lodge also organizes a variety of activities in the surrounding area. You are most likely staying at this lodge because it is close to Abel Tasman National Park. Here, you can enjoy stunning boat trips, kayaking excursions, and hikes. The lodge can also arrange bike tours for you, with or without a guide, as well as ecological tours led by an experienced nature expert. Alternatively, you can admire the summit of the South Island from the air during a helicopter tour. Furthermore, they can organize a horseback riding excursion or a customized behind-the-scenes tour at a renowned vineyard, including a wine tasting, of course.

Good to know

This lodge is influenced by many Asian and especially Japanese elements. Therefore, it is a shoe-free lodge.

The lodge is named after Split Apple Rock, a famous rock formation often visited during a boat tour in Abel Tasman National Park. Private paths from the lodge lead to two beaches. One beach is located at the base of the cliff, and the other is a short walk away. From this latter beach, you can see Split Apple Rock directly in front of you.

Sustainability

The lodge does a lot to protect the stunning nature that surrounds it. For every booking, the Split Apple Retreat makes a donation to the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust. The vision of this trust is to monitor and restore the bird population of Abel Tasman National Park. The lodge also collaborates with the Department of Conservation, Project Janszoon, and the local community to safeguard and enhance the biodiversity and natural environment of the national park. Together with enthusiastic volunteers, they work to reduce the number of invasive harmful species and to increase the population of native animals and plants.
