Experiences

Fly Camping
Would you like to experience the African wilderness to the fullest with all your senses and enjoy a 'back to basics' experience? You can book 1 or 2 nights of Fly Camping. This is a shared experience for a maximum of 6 people. You will hike for approximately 2-4 hours to a specially chosen location, often on the sandy riverbank, where a special camp has been set up. The goal is to truly be in nature, in all its simplicity.
The tents consist only of a kind of coarse mosquito net, providing minimal separation between inside and outside. Your bed consists of two 'bedroll' mattresses, made up with a sheet, a blanket, and down pillows. There is a separate tent where you can change clothes or seek shelter if the weather turns. A shared bathroom is available, featuring a 'bucket shower' and a camping toilet. During this camping experience, your companions may include other guests, the camp team, and an experienced guide and scout.
After arrival, enjoy the surroundings. At sunset, it is time for a sundowner by the campfire, followed by a three-course dinner prepared by the camp team. The rest of the evening is spent gezellig around the campfire, after which you will spend the night in your ‘tent’ under the endless starry sky. With nothing but animal sounds around you, you wake up the next morning. Once awake and refreshed, it is time for breakfast, after which the walk back to Sand Rivers Selous begins.

Important to know

Restaurants
The restaurant and bar are beautifully situated in a wide bend of the river. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served outdoors, offering you a panoramic view of the river and the landscape beyond. With a bit of luck, you might enjoy watching the daily comings and goings of wildlife during your meal, as animals pass by along the opposite bank, or elephants deciding to take a bath.
Swimming pool
Relax in the swimming pool, which is located right next to the restaurant and offers a stunning view of the river.
Activities
Sand Rivers Selous features comfortable 4WD open-sided jeeps, used to organize game drives. Drive through the diverse landscape of wetlands and grasslands to spot animals, from hippos in the river to herds of elephants, curious giraffes, and lounging lions.
The lodge is fortunate to also offer safaris in another way. The walking safari is highly recommended. All your senses will be engaged as an experienced ranger guides you through the stunning landscape. In open plains, you can peacefully observe the animals. But the boat safari is also a unique experience. Cruising along the river, you can spot hippos in the water, and along the banks, all sorts of wildlife may appear. Perhaps a herd of elephants just feels like taking a bath. In the wetlands, you can also see various animals going about their daily routines.
Furthermore, it is possible to enjoy a bush picnic or take a trip to the hot springs.
Sustainability
The lodge is nothing without the flora and fauna that surround it. That is why the lodge is actively involved in the conservation of nature and the animals of Nyerere National Park. For instance, they support the elephant research project of the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute. By gathering as much information as possible about the elephants, they can better protect them in this park. Over the past decade, the elephant population in Nyerere National Park has unfortunately been severely impacted by poachers.
