The Palms

Bwejuu Beach, Zanzibar

About The Palms

The Palms is an oasis on the southeast coast of tropical Zanzibar. A place where rustling coconut palms, white powdery beaches, and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean come together as the backdrop for an exclusive resort. The Palms offers 7 beautifully designed and furnished villas in an intimate setting, where personal service and attention are paramount.

It is time to fully relax and enjoy. Small pavilions with thatched roofs provide shade and privacy for your sunbed on the beach. In the tropical garden of the resort lies the pool, inviting you for a refreshing dip, followed by a drink at the driftwood bar. Head to the restaurant, where Zanzibari cuisine introduces you to a mix of exotic flavors created by the island’s abundant spices. End your day with a delicious cocktail and the sound of the sea as your background music.

Go Local

During this excursion, you will learn more about local life in Zanzibar. You visit a local village near Bwejuu, where you will explore a school and a mosque. You will also be welcomed into a typical Swahili house. Afterwards, you will walk with your guide past several food stalls, where you can of course try some snacks. The beauty of this excursion is that the proceeds go directly to the village itself.

Learn the Ancient Bao Game

You may have seen the Bao game before. This traditional game originates from East Africa, but you can find it in many places across Africa, including Zanzibar. It looks simple, but it is actually a complex and strategic game. During this excursion, you will have the opportunity to learn to play the game from a true Bao expert.

Sustainability

With regard to the environment and sustainability, and also as part of The Zanzibar Collection, The Palms boasts the largest solar panel garden on the island. This provides nearly all the hotels of The Zanzibar Collection with power generated on-site. In addition, they have an international team investing in and striving to be a 100% plastic-free resort. Furthermore, they engage in organic gardening, recycling of waste and water, and aim to protect the environment both on land and in the sea as much as possible.

On a socio-economic level, the resort also commits to sustainability. Many managers at The Palms and the sister resorts started in lower positions and have been able to advance to higher roles with the help of the resorts. They prioritize employing and training as many local residents as possible. The local communities are further supported in health, hygiene, and education, and fresh produce is sourced as much as possible from local farmers and fishermen. For the resort’s interior design, they make use of the work of local artisans and artists.
