Karimunjawa Islands, Java

About Kura Kura Resort

Hidden between the islands of Java and Indonesian Borneo lies a stunning secret spot: the Karimunjawa Archipelago. This is a National Marine Park consisting of 27 pristine, exotic islands. In the midst of these islands is Menjawakan, a lush tropical paradise private island where the comfortable Kura Kura Resort is located. Here, it is not about luxury, but about 'barefoot luxury' and especially the exclusive location, surrounded by sparkling white sandy beaches and azure blue sea stretching to the horizon.

Menjawakan is characterized by numerous tall palm trees and the largest lagoon in the archipelago. Among the palms lies the Kura Kura Resort, built entirely from natural materials from Java. The Private Pool Villas are designed in the style of a traditional Indonesian villa and offer plenty of space, a private pool, and all necessary comforts and conveniences. Enjoying a lounge chair by your pool or relaxing in your open living space feels like a delightful second home.

Spend your day on the beautiful beach or by the resort’s pool. There is an on-site dive center where you can book a diving excursion or rent snorkel equipment to explore the stunning underwater world. Or go sea kayaking for an afternoon. Of course, boat trips to nearby islands are also possible. Head to the Sunset Lounge on the west side of the island for a breathtaking sunset with a cocktail. Then, it’s time for dinner, with options including delicious fresh fish dishes. End the day with a final drink before enjoying a restful night’s sleep.

Castaway Experience

Would you like to feel like a true Robinson Crusoe for a day on a deserted, tropical island? Truly going 'back to basics'? Then spend a night on Krakal, a stunning untouched island surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Leave behind everyday life with all its distractions and enjoy only the breathtaking surroundings and your own company.

Krakal is located about a 30-minute boat ride from the resort. There is accommodation consisting of four very simple cottages. One cottage is furnished as a lounge area, and the other three as bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. These cottages are rented out to only one group at a time, with only the number of bedrooms needed. You will never share the island with anyone else.

The island has no electricity and no kitchen, so you will receive oil lamps, candles, and a flashlight, along with enough freshly prepared food and (non-alcoholic) drinks for your stay on the island. You will also get a mobile phone so you can always call Kura Kura Resort if needed. The resort's speedboat can be at your location within half an hour.

Activities

The Kura Kura Resort features a semi-open fitness area, perfect for starting or ending your day actively. The resort also offers a variety of activities, most of which are water-related. You can enjoy free use of canoes, SUP boards, and snorkeling gear. Flippers are not allowed to protect the coral reefs.

The resort has its own PADI dive center where you can book snorkeling and diving excursions to the most beautiful spots around the Karimunjawa Islands. You can also book a boat trip to one or more of the surrounding islands. This allows you to visit beautiful, uninhabited islands that often boast pristine white beaches, such as Cemara Besar or Robinson Crusoe Island. Here, you can relax and snorkel in the clear waters. Or request a romantic sunset cruise. The excursions can also be arranged as private tours.

Restaurants

The Kura Kura Resort has one restaurant, specializing in local seafood dishes. Think fresh lobster, shrimp, and the catch of the day. Of course, the menu offers many more types of dishes, such as Mediterranean and Indonesian cuisine. You can also choose from different seating options. This can be indoors, but also wonderfully outside on the terrace or at the romantically set tables by the pool.

If you would like a drink, there are also several locations to choose from. If you settle by the pool, the pool bar is the logical choice. On the eastern beach, you'll find the Blue Bar, where you can enjoy a drink comfortably on your lounge chair in the shade of a palm tree. At sunset, it is worth heading to the Sunset Lounge on the west side of the island, where you can enjoy a spectacular view with a cocktail in hand.

A paradise resort is not complete without a spa. The Kura Kura Resort features a small spa offering a menu of delightful spa treatments and relaxing massages. Come here to fully unwind.

Swimming pool

You can spend the day wonderfully relaxed in various places. Find a nice spot on the beach or settle down on a lounge chair by the pool.

Good to know

The Kura Kura Resort is open only during the dry season, from May to October.

In May, the resort can only be reached from Semarang (in the north of Central Java) by public ferry. From June to October, the resort operates flights between Semarang and the main island Karimunjawa on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The flight from Semarang takes approximately 40 minutes. Afterwards, you will take a speedboat for about 40 minutes to reach the resort.

Sustainability

The Kura Kura Resort has been built and designed with the island's natural environment in mind. As much as possible has been constructed around the palm trees, and only local, natural materials from Java have been used. Each room is equipped with a water dispenser and refillable bottles, so there is no need for plastic water bottles. The resort offers paper straws, but these are only provided upon request to reduce unnecessary waste. Additionally, throughout the archipelago, mooring points and buoys have been installed a short distance from the reefs, allowing boats to dock without risking damage to the coral. Flippers are prohibited during snorkeling to further protect the reef.
