Arusha is beautifully situated at the foot of the majestic Mount Meru volcano. However, the city does not have a particularly historic center or notable sights. It is conveniently close to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where most travelers arrive. Arusha mainly offers a lovely place to stay and acclimatize before heading into the inland areas on safari.
If you have a bit more time in Arusha, the city center features several museums such as the Arusha Declaration Museum, the Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre, and of course the National History Museum. Just outside the city, there are some coffee plantations, but the highlight is the Arusha National Park. Here, you will find the 4,565-meter-high Mount Meru, a dormant volcano. This is one of the few national parks where walking safaris are permitted. Mount Meru offers challenging hikes and is considered an excellent training ground for those planning to climb Kilimanjaro someday.
