The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcano that once must have been about 5,000 meters high, but its cone collapsed around 2 to 3 million years ago. It is the largest intact caldera in the world, with the volcano remaining largely unchanged. The crater floor covers approximately 260 km² and is 610 meters deep. It is a truly extraordinary place for a game drive. Part of it is covered with forest or open grassland, and in the center of the crater lies the saltwater lake Lake Magadi.
Because the crater walls are so high, many animals cannot leave the crater. As a result, the Ngorongoro Crater is the most densely populated wildlife area in the world. Almost all the animals you expect to see on a safari can be found here, such as lions, buffalo, hippopotamuses, wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, waterbucks, and crocodiles. This is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the rhinoceros with the pointed lips. During the right periods, flamingos can be seen at Lake Magadi. However, there are no giraffes in the crater because they cannot make the steep descent to the crater floor.
