Discover Serengeti National Park

Driving through the endless savannah landscape of the Serengeti, dotted only with a few acacia trees, where wildlife roams freely, it feels as if you are in the middle of a nature documentary. As if time has stood still and humans have yet to touch this part of the world.

The Serengeti is rightly known as Tanzania's most famous national park. Not only because of its magical scenery but also due to the dense concentration of wildlife that inhabits it. The flat, expansive, barren landscape, with sparse low vegetation here and there, makes it very easy to spot animals. The chances of seeing the Big Five are therefore at their highest here.

The southern and central parts of the park are called 'Serengit' by the Maasai, meaning the land of endless plains. This is a perfect description of the landscape here. In the south, the soil consists of volcanic rock with little vegetation, making it also ideal for spotting animals. The western part has more greenery and even forests, thanks to the Grumeti River that flows through it. The north borders Kenya’s Masai Mara and features a similar landscape, with a bit more trees and shrubs.

PLAN YOUR TRIP TO TANZANIA

On the edge of the Serengeti, there are several private concessions with a similar landscape where many wild animals live or migrate through. Because these concessions are not part of the national park, there are slightly more freedoms here. For example, game drives in the evening or walking safaris are permitted.

The Serengeti boasts an incredible variety of animals. An impressive number of large species live here, such as elephants, giraffes, leopards, lions, cheetahs, wildebeests, zebras, and hippopotamuses. The entire Big Five can be spotted here. Over 500 bird species inhabit the Serengeti, ranging from ostriches and cranes to the beautifully colored dwarf parrot.

Finally, the Serengeti is the ultimate place to experience the Great Migration. This is not a one-time event but takes place throughout the year. Especially the wildebeests and zebras migrate across the plains year-round along a more or less fixed route, crossing to the Maasai Mara in Kenya and back in search of fresh grass and water. Depending on the time of year, you can observe these incredible large herds somewhere in the Serengeti or the Maasai Mara.
